5 AMAZING FACTS ABOUT THE HUMAN BODY

The body is one little, complicated yet amazing organization. So many things take place inside the human body and if we actually took the time to try and study to find out what happens in the human body, then we would definitely be amazed. Even as you read this, there are things happening about your body that you probably have no idea about. Here is a list of 5 facts about your body.

  •   YOU ARE TALLER IN THE MORNING

As absurd as this seems, research has actually shown that the human body is a bit taller in the morning than it was just before you went to bed. I’d explain. During your everyday activities, there is pressure applied to our joints and this pressure causes a compression in the cartilage of the spine which in turn leads to a general reduction even though it is only for a few inches. As we sleep and rest the joints, the spine is released of this pressure which allows your body to go back to its original height. So, if you are going to carry out a height check, make sure it’s after proper rest, preferably in the morning.

  •   POWER PINKY

Ever wondered why it hurts so much when stuff happens to our pinky finger? The reason for this is because half of the hand strength is in the pinkie finger. Studies have shown that without the pinkie finger, it will be very difficult to do a lot of things like pinching. Although the pinkie finger is the one easily forgotten as its application is not found in basic things like writing, eating and holding of objects, it is still the most important finger and losing your pinkie finger would be really bad. The other four fingers only produce half of the hand strength while only the pinkie brings the other half. Take a moment to appreciate the good ol’ pinkie.

  •   YOUR BODY POSITION VS YOUR MEMORY

Studies have shown that the way your body is positioned greatly affects our memory. A study was once carried out on a group of people using the body posture. They were made to slouch and recall negative memories and also to sit erect and recall negative and memories. The same positions were repeated, but this time they were made to recall positive memories. After the study, about 86% of the people confirmed that it was easier to recall negative memories while slouched and it was easier to recall positive memories while sitting erect. Next time you want to have a daydream, put this in mind.

However, studies have shown that the ear wax is actually good for the ears a it serves the necessary purpose of lubricating the ears and protecting it from infections. It is like a second layer that protects the main ear from dusts and infection.

  •   THE HUMAN HAIR CAN TELL WHEN YOU SLEEP

Studies show that the genes responsible for regulating our body clocks are found in the hair follicle cells.  These genes are used to express each person’s sleep-wake cycle. The hair is used to track the sleeping pattern of different people so if you get up late or sleep late, your hair can tell.

5 FACTS YOU ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT ARE FALSE

Growing up, and some way or another there are several facts we must have heard or come across which we all believed to be true. Going deeper into research, it has been found that those facts are in fact false. Here is a list of five facts you always believed which happens to be false.

  •   CHAMELEONS CAMO

We must have heard these famous facts and maybe even passed on the news, but contrary to what most people think, Chameleons do not change their colors to suit the environment which they are found. Instead, the color change is as a result of the chameleon’s body temperature or its mood or the angle at which it is hit by light. So, the chameleon did not turn bright yellow to suit the color of the flowers on the tree, rather bright yellow is a color used to signify its anger. Maybe you saw it turn 5 colors within a short time, then it’s probably because it wants to mate so it decides to change into various color to attract its mate.

  •   ALBERT EINSTEIN FAILED MATH

I know we have heard this so many things and even used it as consolation to ourselves for failing math. After all ‘Albert Einstein’ failed math’, right? Wrong. According to his biography, Albert received high math grades in class although his teacher saw him as not so remarkable. But, he was actually an okay math student and not totally dumb in math to the extent of failing out. You can read his biography here, so next time you hear that you can prove how false it is.

  •   SHAVING YOUR HAIR AT FIRST IS NO GOOD

We may have at one point or another experienced the fear of our first shave of hair on any part of the body as we have heard countless times that after you shave for the first time, the hairs only come back thicker. You can stop sharing the ‘fact’ now. According to the scientific American, the hair is no thicker than it was before you trimmed it, this feeling is all a perception. Due to the nature of the human hair, when the tip is sliced away, it may appear that the remaining hair is thicker, but it is actually the same texture as it was before it was sliced.

  •   YOUR TONGUE’S TASTE

We all learnt from school or some health practitioners that the tongue has different parts which can detect different tastes. Like the tip tastes sweet things, the sides tastes salty things and the back tastes bitter things. This was taken into further research and has been proved false. All parts of the tongue can detect all tastes.

5 FUNNY LAWS AROUND THE WORLD

  Laws of a country should be adhered to and most laws have penalties for breaking them. However, there are some laws around the world that are quite strange and a little humorous. Here is a list of 5 funny laws around the world;

●SWITZERLAND’S GOLDFISH RULE
Switzerland is well known for its strictness and dedication towards violation of animal cruelty laws. However, in 2008 Switzerland enacted a law that is against owning only one goldfish as it is considered inhumane isolation. Goldfishes are known for their intelligence and high retentive memory. They love interacting with each other therefore it seems like a punishment to keep them alone. There are also other animals covered by this law like the Guinea Pigs and the Budgerigars. As for the Guinea Pig, there are even companies responsible for pairing them up with partners and replacing them in case one of the partners die.

●MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE’S NO SPITTING RULE
According to their act, anyone found guilty of spitting anywhere except inside a drain is liable of a fine of RM 100. Singapore is famous for its unusual laws but most of them are aimed towards keeping the country clean. Once, a man was identified as a perennial spitter in Singapore and was charged 430 Euros and jailed for 5 weeks.

In Chelyabinsk and Moscow in Russia it is illegal to drive a dirty car. It is in fact liable to a fine of 500 Roubles. ●ENGLAND’S MUTE SWAN RULE
Most animals have nobody to speak on their behalf, not the mute swans though. All the mute swans of England are properties of the queen of England and she is the only one permitted to kill and eat them. Under the wildlife and countryside act of 1981, mute swans are protected and violating the law attracts a huge penalty of 5,000 Euros as a fine or up to 6 months in prison.

●ITALY’S ANTI-DEATH RULE
Now death is one of the few things that cannot be controlled by anyone, but in at least two cities in Italy, it is illegal to die. If residents of these cities fail to take preventive measures by getting an annual health check up, they will be fined 10 Euros per year. 5 MISTAKES THAT CHANGED HISTORY

Not every mistake gets overlooked. Some of them actually matter. Some jobs are so crucial that a little mistake in any part of them could cause a heavy damage. Imagine giving the president of a country a total different speech to recite on live TV.  Several people made mistakes that changed history and here is a list of 5 of them.

●THE WICKED BIBLE
Published in the year 1631 by Robert Blake and Martin Lucas of the royal printers in London, the bible was meant to be a reprint of the King James Version Bible. However, there was just one problem, a mistake in a very crucial part of the bible, The Ten Commandments. Now, while trying to write ‘Thou Shalt not commit adultery’, the word ‘not’ was omitted from the sentence, making it read as ‘Thou Shalt commit adultery’ in Exodus 20: 14 and a few copies were published and sold. It was not until about a year later that the publishers were sued, and fined 300 Euros and stripped of their printing license, while the majority of the copies produced where burnt.

●NASA’S $80,000,000 MISTAKE
In the year 1962, NASA designed an interplanetary probe called Mariner1 and sent it into space to explore Venus. This was America’s first inter-planetary probe and it would have been successful. However, there was a little mathematical error, an ‘over-bar’ supposed to be put above a letter was omitted. By the time they discovered their mistake, they had already sent it into space and to avoid destruction, they had to detonate the probe five minutes after it took off. This probe cost $80,000,000 and till date is still regarded as one of the most expensive mistakes in history.

 ●THE HESSIAN’S DEFEAT AT TRENTON
In the 1770’s, there was a battle between the Hessian soldiers and Washington which held in the town of Trenton. The Hessians however lost the battle but this could have been averted had the Hessian commander read the note sent to him by a loyal farmer who spotted the battle move before time and warned the commander through a note. The note was found unwrapped and unread in his pocket after he died in the battle.
●THE BERLIN WALL
On November 9, 1989, the spokesman for Eastern Germany Gunter Schabowski held a conference where he tried to explain some minor revisions to the travel code. During the meeting, he mistakenly implied that the wall which have stood for so many years were being completely removed. One of the reporters on hearing this asked him when the revisions would begin and he said immediately. This statement caused the press to carry the news about that the wall was to come down immediately. On hearing the press, a large group of people gathered around the borders to riot for the cause of the wall to come down. Instead of dealing with a riot, the authorities allowed the walls to come down.

●THE TITANIC SHIP
The story of the crashing of the Titanic Ship is well known.  However, few people know that the ship had no binoculars to spot obstacles from a distance. Just before the ship sailed, the company replaced the ship’s second officer with a more experienced one, the first guy however forgot to hand over the keys to the locker that held the binoculars to his replacement, so they had no access to the binoculars. News has it that perhaps if the Titanic ship had binoculars, they would have spotted the iceberg sooner and been able to avoid the crash.

5 ANIMALS THAT SAVED HUMAN LIVES

Over the years we have had several cases of animals that saved Human lives. Does it not feel so refreshing to know that most animals, even the ones designed to attack, kill and eat, actually have the brains to notice there is trouble and save human lives when needed? There is a truck load full of stories of animals that saved human lives. But let’s consider these heroic five.

●THE THREE LIONS
We would all agree that the lion is not the man’s friend and the last thing you should hear about a lion is that it saved human lives. Now imagine three of those creatures agreeing to save a live instead of having a good meal. It all happened in the rural south-west Ethiopia when a 12 year old girl was kidnapped by some men while returning from school. After harboring her for a week and according to the girl beating her, one day they were trying to move her since they were being pursued by the police. Unfortunately for them, amidst the whole pursuit, they stumbled upon three lions who chased the men away and surrounded the girl, staying with her until she was found by the police. Upon seeing the police, they left her and quietly went away. When the police picked her up, she was scared and shocked but still alive. Wildlife experts say that the lions may have let her go because her cries sounded like a meowing of a little lion cub. Others say the lions were about to eat her before being intercepted by the police. We’ll never know, all we know is they saved her life.

●THE PARROT
When Willie the parrot learnt a new stream of words, the word ‘baby’ was not amongst them. 19 year old Megan who was helping babysit a two year old child stepped out for a minute while the child watched television and ate, suddenly the parrot flew into the room and started screeching ‘Mama, baby!’ ‘Mama, baby!’ immediately getting Megan’s attention. Megan rushed back to the kid and found her blue from choking on her food. She quickly helped dislodge the food from her throat and immediately the parrot saw her attending to the kid, he stopped squealing. Who knows what would have happened if Megan had wasted just a little bit of time and of course, if our hero parrot wasn’t around to grab her attention.

●THE BELUGA WHALE
A 26 year old female diver once joined a contest in which participants plunged to the bottom of a 20 foot deep arctic pool to see who could submerge the longest. During the contest, when she was trying to come out of the water she suffered a crippling leg cramp due to the arctic temperatures causing her to be paralyzed. She began to choke and started drowning and thought she was going to die. Suddenly a hero stepped out in the form of a beluga whale. Noticing the diver’s predicament and using her dolphin like shaped nose, she encircled the diver’s leg in her mouth and started to push her to the top of the pool. The diver got to the surface and survived. This was how the Beluga whale joined our list of incredible animals that saved human lives.

 ●THE GORILLA
During a zoo exhibit, a 3 year old boy once ran ahead of his mum and in his over curious nature, climbed towards the gorilla pit, before anyone could notice he fell 18 feet onto the pit. They were 7 gorillas present there, but a 7 year old female gorilla called Binti quickly rushed to the child with a baby gorilla at her back. She picked up the child and turned around preventing the other gorillas from getting to him while cradling him in her arms. She then carefully placed the child near a door where the zookeepers could easily retrieve the child. The child was found and rushed to the hospital and his case was listed as critical due to the depth of his fall. But it may have been worse if Binti had not rushed to his rescue.

●THE DOG
Man’s best friend indeed. Dogs have been known for their dogged loyalty to their masters and families where they belong and Khan the dog was not left out of its own heroism. A toddler was outside in the yard playing with Khan whilst under the supervision of her mother’s eyes from the window. Suddenly, the toddler’s mum noticed that Khan began to get aggressive with the toddler, picking her up and throwing her behind him. When the mum rushed out to find out what was wrong, she realized that the dog had been trying to keep the child away from a King Brown Snake which attacked them in the yard. The snake ended up biting the dog before leaving, and the dog recovered fully after an anti-venom treatment. What would have happened if Khan hadn’t been present to stop the snake and it had bitten the girl instead?

5 MISTAKES THAT LED TO AN INVENTION

More often than not, mistakes are frowned at and unwanted. But for some people, their mistakes made them inventors. In fact, we owe them an applause for their clever mistakes. A few of these mistakes are;

●ALEXANDER FLEMINGS DISCOVERY OF PENICILLIN

Prior to the year 1928, Fleming was only a normal doctor, pharmacologist and microbiologist with nothing to his name except a few researches on enzymes. During the first world war, Fleming served in an Army Medical Corp where he watched a lot of soldiers die due to untreated infections. He first moved a motion to state that the antiseptics which was the only treatment being given to the soldiers at the time were ineffective in curing the bacteria, but the motion was rejected, still he carried on. One day in 1928, Fleming left an uncovered Petri dish next to an open window, where it became contaminated with fungus spores. Checking under a microscope, he discovered that the bacteria around that fungus were all dying, so he isolated the fungus and later discovered that it was a very effective cure for fever, pneumonia, meningitis and many more infections. Penicillin was therefore discovered.

●JOHN PEMBERTON’S COCA-COLA

The Coca-cola drink you enjoy today was actually produced as a drug. In the 1880s, a pharmacist John Pemberton specialized in selling cures to relieve headaches and nerve disorders. One day he cooked up the Coca concoction for this purpose and business was blooming. Until in 1885 when there was a bn on the sale of alcohol in Atlanta He therefore removed the wine and created a syrup that could be mixed with carbonated water. You guessed it, it became Coca-Cola. Pemberton is gone, but his drinks live on probably one beside you right now.

●PERCY SPENCER’S MICROWAVE

You are probably very familiar with this one. In 1945, Percy Spencer was working in a radioactive environment and he just happened to have a chocolate bar in his pocket. Imagine his surprise when he felt a sizzling sensation in his trouser pockets, he reached out to take out his chocolate and it was melted. Viola! He traced the occurrence to the microwave emitting magnetron he was working with and then proceeded to invent the microwave machine.

●JOHN KELLOGG’S CORNFLAKES

John Kellogg was the superintendent of the Battle Creek Sanitarium in 1894. He worked with his brother Will Kellogg to feed patients. One day, Will accidentally left boiled wheat outside and by the tie he returned, it was already stale. Instead of throwing it they still rolled it but it formed flakes instead of the usual dough. They toasted the flakes, served the patients, and the rest is history. In 1906, the Kellogg’s company was created.

●CHARLES GOODYEAR’S PLASTICS

If not for Charles’ mistake, you probably would have been walking around carrying a wooden or steel container and well, nobody would mind that because that would be the norm anyway. One day, in the lab, Charles Goodyear combined rubber and sulfur, and accidentally put it left it on a hot stove. When he returned, he found that the sulfur and rubber had formed something else, a tough and durable material that would later be called Plastic.
On the second part, John Wesley Hyatt while organizing a 10,000 dollars contest for the person that could find a replacement for elephant ivory in billiard balls accidentally spilled a bottle of collodion, after it dried, it formed a flexible but strong material. All this made no sense until in 1872, Hyatt’s brother Isaiah called the material ‘celluloid’. This is of course what now formed the plastics being used today.
