5 CREATURES WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF HUMAN DEATHS

 If you are thinking Lions and Cheetahs and all those huge and scary looking animals, then I am here to disappoint you. Here’s a list of five animals that actually took the highest number of human lives in the world.

●SNAILS

Yes, really. They are just slow and harmless creatures that always mind their businesses and look for nobody’s trouble right? Wrong! As of 2018, Snails hold the annual records of 20,000 deaths. Freshwater snails carry a parasitic worm that infects people with a disease called Schistosomiasis. In Nigeria, there are more than 100,000 cases of this disease per year and it can be spread through contaminated food or water.

●DOGS

You must have had of Rabies which is the name of the disease spread by infected dogs. According to the World Health Organization, about 35,000 deaths are caused by rabies and 99% of that number comes from the rabies from dogs. There are however vaccines that can prevent the virus.

●SNAKES

Okay, these ones are more predictable. Snakes have caused a total of about 100,000 deaths in the past year. The troubling news is that there is a report of the shortening or reduction in the availability of anti-venoms needed to kill the poisons inflicted by some snakes.

●HUMANS

In 2018, in England, the number of homicide cases has reached its highest point in a decade. The annual number of human deaths by humans is about 437,000, making humans the 2nd most deadly creatures to themselves.

●MOSQUITOES

You have often heard the saying small but mighty, this is a perfect example. Those little insects you ignore all the time and even harbor in your homes have caused the largest number of deaths in the past year. Malaria is treatable, but should not be underestimated. As of 2018, mosquitoes caused about 750,000 deaths, leading the rest of the creatures notably and retaining its place as the creature that caused the highest number of human deaths in 2018. It is not the mosquito itself that kills, but the virus which the Female Anopheles mosquito carries and this specie is all over the world except in Antarctica. Note that besides malaria, Mosquitoes also carry other transmittable diseases like the West Nile Virus and the Dengue fever, but it has the highest killing rates from Malaria.

5 MOST VISITED PLACES IN 2018

Don’t you just love vacations? A large number of people in the world enjoy travelling and countries are stepping up their games to be able to attract more visitors to see what they have. Let’s look at five countries that recorded very high visits in 2018 and some of their main attractions.

●Dubai

With a whooping figure of 15.79 million visitors in 2018, Dubai claimed a large number of the world’s visiting population. This information is probably not surprising, as the country’s tourism sector was worth 29.6bn dollars a year. With so many attractions there, who would not want to visit such beauty? Famous for holding the world’s tallest building known as the Burg Khalifa, the world’s biggest shopping mall which has mammoth aquariums and indoor ski slopes, the Dubai Frame and don’t forget the largest indoor theme park, over 600 hotels including the world’s tallest hotel the Burg Al-Arab, the butterfly garden and plenty more. I mean, why not Dubai!

●Paris

I bet you already knew the city of fashion and food was going to be in the list. Who would not want to see the Eiffel tower? With over 18,000 sturdy irons and 2.5 million rivets, the tower remains the most visited tourist center in Paris. The louvre museum with over 30,000 artworks, the Arc de Triomphe, the Seine river cruises, Sainte-chapelle, Legendary café and oh, remarkable cuisine collaborated to rake in 17.44 million visitors in 2018.

●Bangkok

You have never seen anything like the Grand Palace of Bangkok. Though built in 1872, it’s grandeur spells royalty. How about the Wat Suthat, one of the oldest and most beautiful temples in Bangkok, the 27 meter high Giant Swing siuated in front of the Wat Suthat,the Chatuchak Market, Terminal 21, Lumpini Park, the National museum and other eye catching sites. The number of visitors in Bangkok last year was 20.05 million people.

●London

The beautiful streets of London raked in 19.83 million visitors just last year. Famous for it’s luxurious shopping centers and hotels, London is a must visit. There’s the great Museum of London, the National Gallery with paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Vincent Gogh and the likes of those remarkable artistes, there is of course the Royal Botanical Garden famous for its glass-like dome shape. Buckingham Palace and the famous Big Ben which is the Elizabeth Tower which has the giant bell inside the tower said to be 150 years old!

●Singapore

If ever you are in search of the real definition of a zoo, get a ticket and find your way to Singapore. If you get disappointed, ask for a refund of your money from me. The Singapore flyer, Raffles hotels, Sentosa Island, Chinatown, Parks and Museums of all kinds attracted 13.91 million people to Singapore in 2018.

5 PEOPLE WHO WOKE UP DURING THEIR OWN FUNERALS

Well, we have all seen horror movies that sure look like this, but reality? Well, history has recorded some people who decided it was not yet time for them to die and woke from their coffins even after declared dead. They may sound hilarious to you now, but close your eyes for a second and imagine attending a funeral where the dead is awoken. Look at five times this happened in history;

ESSIE DUNBAR
ESSIE was only 32 years old when she was confirmed dead after an epilepsy attack. Her funeral program was arranged for 11 a. m the next day. Essie’s sister happened to arrive late for the ceremony and before she could meet up, the body had already been lowered into the ground. However, it had to be brought up again for Essie’s sister to pay her last respects. Things didn’t go quite as planned as Essie sat straight up in her coffin and smiled at her sister. This situation was the perfect example of commotion, everyone instantly fled the scene including Essie’s sister. The ministers overseeing the event fell into the grave in a bid to escape. As for poor confused Essie, she ran after the fleeing crowd causing even more commotion. She died much later after being rescued.

MATTHEW WALL
Matthew was declared dead amidst preparation for his wedding. On his way to the church in a coffin to begin his burial, one of the pallbearers holding his casket slipped thereby dropping the casket. The shock from the impact of the casket to the ground woke Matthew wall straight up and he started screaming and banging on the casket to be let out. He was let out eventually, and proceeded to get married and live for 24 more years.

MARGARET DICKSON
Margaret picked up her nickname ‘Half hangit Maggie’ from her almost death situation. In 1721, she gave birth to a baby and hid it following some circumstances. The baby however died and since she could not bury the child because she had hid it all along, she dumped it by the river. The baby was somehow found and traced to her and she was sentenced to death by hanging. After she was hung to death and being taken to a graveyard, she awoke. She went back to her normal life as people saw the occurrence as strange.

ELEANOR MARKHAM
In 1894, Eleanor ‘died’ during her treatment for heart problems. Two days later, during the drive to the cemetery, Eleanor awoke inside her coffin and shouted, the coffin was opened and she was alive. She was helped out and she later said that she could hear everything being discussed about her burial preparation.


THE LITTLE BOY
In 1913, a three year old boy was being buried when he sat up from his coffin and stared straight at his grandma. His grandma immediately passed away from the shock of the whole experience, the boy also become unconscious and was confirmed dead by a doctor.

Here is a short list of people who allllmost secured the bag.

●Nolan Bushnell:

Well, he might sound familiar or not, but had he taken the deal years back, he definitely would be sounding familiar today. Nolan Bushnell was Steve Jobs’ first boss. Now, when Jobs launched his apple business initially, he went to Nolan for capital. In fact, he offered to give his boss the sum of 50,000 dollars and a whooping one-third of the company (now just take a moment to imagine yourself owning one-third of apple, for just donating capital…snap out of it, this is reality). Well, Nolan Bushnell turned down Steve Jobs’ offer and Steve Jobs went on to find another means. Today, I guess you know who had regrets.

●Excite:

You may not be familiar with this name now, but sometime in the 90’s, Excite was one of the flourishing internet companies. A time came when the company was about crashing down, and well some kids with a start up business called Google came to the CEO of Excite, George Bell and offered him the start up idea for a 1 million dollar price. George Bell turned down the offer even when it was beat down to 750,000 dollars. In 2001, Excite company filed for bankruptcy and crashed, and Google? Google is a story for another day.

●Blockbuster:

There was a time when blockbuster was the great king of entertainment, in fact it was the only king of entertainment. Then came Netflix a company struggling to barely keep up. The CEO of Netflix offered to sell his company to blockbuster for 50,000,000 dollars and was embarrassingly turned down by the CEO of blockbuster who felt the offer was just not worth it. Today, Netfix is worth more than 70 billion dollars and people have way stopped renting DVD’s carefully putting blockbuster out of business.

●Kodak camera:

Remember Kodak? The one time best camera films. They were doing very well and one of the Kodak engineers Steven Sasson in 1975 developed a concept for digital cameras. He shared his idea with his employers expecting an exciting acceptance but was instead turned down. The employers buried the idea hoping it would never emerge again lest it sink their own business. One way or the other, digital cameras still found its way into limelight and almost made Kodak run into bankruptcy. Today, digital cameras are in charge. Imagine if they had taken the idea in 1975, should have been a multi- billion company.

●THE 15 Publishers:

Bloomsbury publishing company still records the publishing of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter as their best decision ever. Before them, JK Rowling was turned down by about 15 publishers who thought it would be a waste as the book would not be a success. Today, the Harry Porter franchise is worth billions of dollars and Bloomsbury is still smiling.

5 DOCTORS WHO MADE HORRIBLE MISTAKES

 Medicine is a very critical practice. It deals directly with the lives of people and so should be delicately handled. Doctors are also advised to be professionals before trying out things with human lives. So many horrible mistakes have been made by doctors while trying to save lives that actually almost destroyed it. Here is a list of five of them;

●WILLIE KING’S WRONG LEG:

In the University Community Hospital in Tampa, a 52 year old man Willie King was scheduled for an amputation surgery. During the surgery, the surgeon’s team realized that they were operating on the wrong leg. However, it was already too late to reverse the procedure, and the leg had to be amputated. The surgeon was fined $10,000 and his license suspended for 6 months. The hospital also paid another $900,000 to Willie King and the surgeon paid an additional $250,000. Of course, all of this cannot buy a new leg, but oh, well.

●SHERMAN SIZEMORE’S CONSCIOUS SURGERY:

In 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital, Sherman was booked for exploratory surgery to determine the cause of his abdominal pain. He ended up joining in the exploring of his own body, when he experienced anesthetic awareness ( a condition where a patient is able to feel everything during a surgery, but unable to communicate or even move)*shudders*. The doctor in charge of the anesthetics had apparently failed to give him the general anesthetics required to make him unconscious for the duration of the surgery. At 73, Sherman ended up committing suicide as the trauma he had felt during the surgery was too much for him to handle.

●DONALD CHURCH’S RETRACTOR:

In the year 2000, at the University Of Washington Medical Center, a 13-inch retractor was forgotten in the abdomen of Donald Church during a surgery to remove an abdominal tumor from his body. Fortunately for Donald, the retractor was removed and he suffered no long-term consequence. The hospital

●THE WRONG KIDNEY:

A patient (details withheld for privacy sake) had a cancerous tumor in one kidney and went to the Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital to have it removed. When the pathologist examined the kidney and found out that there was nothing wrong with it, they realized that the doctors ended up removing the healthy Kidney and leaving the cancerous one.

●THE WRONG PATIENT:

A 67 year old woman Joan Morris was admitted to the hospital for cerebral angiography. After the procedure she underwent an invasive cardiac electro physiology study which she was not supposed to. After the procedure, instead of returning to her bed, she was transferred to another floor. She should have been discharged the next day, but due to the mix up, she was taken in for an open heart procedure. After almost an hour of surgery, a call came into the surgery room from a doctor from another department, asking the surgeon what he was doing with his patient as she had nothing wrong with her heart. Surgery was aborted and she was returned in a stable condition, thankfully.
